5 out of 5 stars The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly   July 25, 2006
28 out of 29 found this review helpful

When I opened the box, I KNEW this CO2 pistol meant business. It's so eerily authentic...it's almost intimidating. The box even says: "As real as it gets".
Having had a number of Crosman spring & CO2 guns over the years, I had to give this one a try.

The GOOD points:
1) VERY realistic...in other words, do NOT let the police catch you brandishing this...it might get YOU SHOT!
2) Easy loading with a clip that holds up to 17 BBs
3) Blowback feature....again, realistic, as is the slight recoil you feel.
4) Great BB pistol for training and plinking.
5) Accurate pistol, considering it is only a 3.3 inch barrel with no sight adjustments.
6) The last shot locks the slide back....just like the real deal. And when racked & cocked, a red indicator shows up on the back of the slide (when safety moved to *fire* mode).

The BAD points:
1) My pistol jammed after a few rapid shots, and there is NO practical way, short of trying to dismantle the pistol to CLEAR a jam...not a good thing. The magazine might need a design "tweak" or two. I feel the mag is very sensitive to any BB which might have the slightest deformity.
2) The select switch for FIRE/SAFE mode....the sawtooth appendage is rough to move with anything other than your offhand.
3) The wheel that tightens the CO2 cartridge...not easy to tighten for a novice..better to let DAD do that.

The UGLY points:
1) Crosman/Walther/Umarex needs to let some BB pistol enthusiasts take a stab at (re)engineering the bad points. This could be THE BEST PISTOL on the market *if* these issues were taken care of. The consumer should ALWAYS have a method of clearing ANY jam in ANY weapon. That's just common sense.
2) The price is a bit high, considering it is NOT a pellet gun, but a BB gun (smooth bore, no rifling with less muzzle velocity). Shop around for the best price.
3) This is purely aesthetic (to me)....the shell ejection port on the real gun is molded (on this pistol) as part of the slide, so that takes away from the authenticity a bit, but no biggie. Still, it would be a nice touch.

((This is not a major issue, but if you want to extract the most shots from a C02 cartridge, keep it at room temperature, or in your pockets and try to space your shots. Having a COLD cylinder will reduce the number of shots available by at least 10%, This applies to ANY C02 activated weapon.))

**The people I bought the original pistol from had no problem with replacing my defective pistol for another (new) one.
Overall, I am STILL very pleased with the pistol, and would recommend it to anyone wanting to punch some paper, plink some cans, or crack some bottles. Check the return policies with your seller, just in case.
Quality Control is there to make sure defects don't get into consumer hands...and every once in a while, a piece or two falls through the cracks.

This is STILL a great pistol, and since most every seller out there would understand a situation similar to mine and make good on it, it's a total "win-win" sccenario...
My replacement pistol works GREAT. After...a LOT of clipfuls of BBs, this baby is doing a number on the old phonebook I am using for a "backstop". It's got some good penetration power, and will turn this book to confetti REAL soon.

SO...go get yourself one...and a LOT of BBS to go with it, because once you fire this pistol, you'll be hooked!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent practice and training tool for real shooters   April 4, 2007

This airgun is very well made, and the form and function are flawless.

The main selling point for me was that I was looking for a tool to introduce my boys to sport shooting. The nature of this airgun is that it resembles the function of a real handgun extremely closely; from the mag release to the recoil of the slide, and the slide release lever, etc.

It's an excellent tool to practice with, and to introduce novices to shooting real firearms. It's doesn't get any more realistic than this!

5 out of 5 stars Great fun!   February 10, 2007

This has to be one of the best bargains around for sheer fun. First of all, the CP99 Compact fits my hand perfectly. It has a blow-back action that simulates a real semi-auto firearm recoil. It has a decent trigger, firing single action only. It has the weight of a genuine cartridge-firing handgun. It takes a real stack magazine that hold 17 rounds. Literally rounds--it shoot BB's. The weight, balance and general ergonomics of the gun make it pretty accurate for a smooth bore. And it also mimicks the Walther P99 handgun--a truly well designed and reliable firearm. It's a real pleasure to use an air pistol that doesn't have fake levers and buttons all over it. This gun has a functioning magazine release and slide release. The one sore point (shared by just about every other air pistol I've seen) is a truly wretchedly designed safety that is placed on the wrong side of the gun for a right-hander and requires two motions to put into fire mode.

I bought the gun with four spare magazines. It's a wise idea. Loading the magazines is slow and tedious and requires almost as much accuracy as hitting a bullseye. But, oh boy, once the magazines are loaded the fun really starts. Having 17 BB's available as fast as you can pull the trigger is a temptation to just blast away. Go ahead. BB's cost next to nothing and this gun is economical in using CO2 so just enjoy it. The excellent ergonomics mean you'll be hitting a beer can or keeping all shots in a tight group on target at 10 meters, off-hand, with no problem. I'm actually able to shoot this gun more accurately than I can a couple of rifled barrel pellet pistols I own.

While this gun is designated "Compact" it really is no smaller than the standard CP99. It does share the styling of the P99 Compact in the grip area but the CP99 Compact's grip is not as short. It fits my hand well.

I really like this gun. I can't go in my back yard and shoot targets or empty cans with a real firearm but I can have a real blast with this little BB gun and never disturb the neighbors or draw any attention. Focusing your concentration on a target while shooting is one of the best mind exercises around. It's a discipline I'm not really very good at but it's a satisfying and liberating endeavor. Using an air gun like this is very good therapy.

finally when the day the stuff had shipped, they get the phone, and didn't even give a sorry. now i waste money to shipping the gun back and also waste the money when they shipped it to me.
